Practice Planning for Youth Skills

Last Night with Lakes Region Lakers- 12/19/23

Every other Tuesday throughout the fall and winter, I run the Lakes Region Lakers skill sessions at the Merrill Fay Arena in Laconia. Been doing them since the 2013-24 season.

Great kids and a lot of fun.

I attempt to progress the drills throughout the season with an early focus on power skating, then more onto puck skills and shooting (in October/ November). By December the focus becomes more on passing. By the time I get to January and February, we take the focus on game play and game scenarios with skill and emphasis on the skills required to be successful in those situations (1 v1’s, 2 v2s, 3v2s etc).

The above video is showing some of the drills from the session on 12/19/23. Below is my outline practice plan for the session (I apologize for my handwriting and lack of a more elaborate writing template).

Always focus on keeping the kids moving, having fun, getting a lot of repetitions, and taking a few minutes each session to interact with each kid and give them some feedback).

It might help you with your sessions. Enjoy!
